Starting from May 1, 2025, the design registration cost in the European Union will change. Other modifications regarding the protection of EU designs will also come into force.
In this article, you’ll find out how much it will cost to register a design with the EUIPO and what other changes to expect.
On November 18, 2024, the long-awaited Regulation (EU) No. 2024/2822 of the European Parliament and the Council was published. This regulation amends the previous framework for Community designs, namely Council Regulation (EC) No. 6/2002.
The reform will be rolled out in stages:
May 1, 2025 – first set of changes, described below, come into effect,
July 1, 2026 – additional changes implemented.
Here’s what’s new:
New terminology:
We are moving from RCD (Registered Community Design) to REUD (Registered European Union Design).
Updated design definition:
A design is now described as:
“the appearance of the whole or a part of a product resulting from the features, in particular the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture and/or materials, of the product itself and/or of its decoration, including the movement, transition or any other sort of animation of those features.”
Precise product definition:
“any industrial or handicraft item, other than a computer program, regardless of whether it is embodied in a physical object or materialises in a non-physical form.”
New registration rules:
Adjustments to the official fee structure.
Possibility to submit video files if the design includes animation or shape changes.
New protection symbol:
After registration, designers can use the new Ⓓ symbol (D in a circle) — similar to the ® symbol used for trademarks.
Starting May 1, 2025:
EUR 350 — is a design registration cost for a single design, covering first 5 years of protection.
Registering multiple designs?
You can include up to 50 designs in one application.
For each additional design (beyond the first) submitted in the same application:
EUR 125 — is a design registration cost per additional design.
👉 Tip: It’s more cost-effective to register designs in bulk!
Good news for SMEs:
Grants covering official registration fees are still available — but make sure to apply before the funds run out!
Renewal fees will increase significantly:
Renewal Period | Current Fee | Fee from May 1, 2025 |
---|---|---|
Years 6–10 | EUR 90 | EUR 150 |
Years 11–15 | EUR 120 | EUR 250 |
Years 16–20 | EUR 150 | EUR 400 |
Years 21–25 | EUR 180 | EUR 700 |
Not all fees are going up:
Request for invalidity:
New fee: EUR 320 (was EUR 350)
Appeal against an EUIPO decision:
New fee: EUR 720 (was EUR 800)
Good news:
The EUR 200 fee for registering a change of ownership will be abolished.
